Doorway

9″x12″, Colored Pencil and coffee

doorway

Technique
I teach about dimensions all the time in my classroom. More than likely there are more out there that we can’t even test for scientifically yet and remain theoretical. I love the idea of other world(s) being in existence yet imperceptible to us. The idea of a ‘doorway’ being opened to one or some of these worlds is exciting and sparks something deep within me about the unknown. In drawing this picture I had it all sketched out and most of my dark values were shaded in when I spilled a cup of coffee over the entire work except for the middle of the paper! I was so frustrated that I decided to dry it out, overlay it with a extremely heavy coat of colored pencil and hope that I could pull off a good looking picture still…I was happy with my results.

Photoshop
After scanning in my work I intended to heavily modify the picture color in order to mask any coffee stains showing through, but found that most of it had successfully been covered by my colored pencil work. Darkened the blacks some, and did some modifications to the mid gray values. I blended the background sky at a 50% feathered opacity, and lastly I increased the saturation values of my yellows and warm colors mainly in the lit area coming from the open doorway.

Cool artwork, Tobin! I like the contrast between the themes inside the doorway and outside of the doorway in this piece. :) I’m so excited that your site is up and running!

Wow! Another awesome picture but this one sounds like it was created on accident!
When i first saw it, I thought it had another Bible-lesson thing with it, ya know “your life is like the inside of the door, yuckie and dead, but when you open the door God has for you, you find peace and are in a living environment in Him” I would have never know you spilled coffee on it if you wouldn’t have said so!
